How do you recover from an awkward silence?

The chaRIZZma Team4 min read

Recover from an awkward silence by reviving the conversation, not changing the subject. Reach back to something they already said and ask a deeper question about it. Silences feel longer to you than to them, so a calm, curious follow-up almost always brings it back.

The silence is louder in your head

A two-second pause feels like ten when you are anxious. The other person rarely experiences it the way you do. Knowing that buys you the composure to respond instead of panic-filling the gap with something random.

Moves that actually revive it

  • Callback: 'Wait, go back to the thing about your trip, what happened next?' Reviving beats topic-hopping.
  • Deepen, don't widen: ask why or how about something already on the table.
  • Share to invite sharing: a short, honest reaction gives them an easy on-ramp back in.
  • Name it lightly if needed: a relaxed 'anyway' with a smile resets the energy without making it heavy.

All of these are reflexes you can drill. Practice recovering a dying conversation a few times in a low-stakes setting and the move becomes automatic, so the next real silence is just another rep you have already run.

Stop reading about it. Run a rep.

Rehearse the conversation that scares you, out loud with an AI coach, then take it into the real world.
