Does practicing conversations with an AI actually help social anxiety?

The chaRIZZma Team5 min read

Early controlled studies suggest yes: practicing conversations with a social AI can lower loneliness within two weeks and social anxiety within about a month. It works for the same reason exposure therapy does, repeated safe reps, minus the public risk that stops people from practicing at all.

Why a judgment-free partner matters

The thing that keeps anxious people from practicing is the audience. Every real rep carries the risk of visible embarrassment, so people avoid it, and avoidance keeps the fear intact. An AI partner removes the audience while keeping the part that builds the skill: real-time, out-loud response.

What the research found

In a 2025 study, students who practiced with a social AI saw loneliness drop within two weeks and social anxiety fall by week four. A separate body of work on virtual-reality social rehearsal found it reduced anxiety about as well as in-person exposure across seventeen randomized trials. The throughline: simulated reps transfer to real life.

The catch: it has to lead back outside

Practice is the means, not the end. The reps only pay off if they hand you back to the real world. That is why chaRIZZma pairs each rehearsal with a small real-world challenge, so the confidence you build in private actually shows up when it counts.
